Artificial Intelligence: A Great Disruptor in Our Lives
Billionaire investor Ray Dalio believes that artificial intelligence (AI) will soon have a significant impact on our lives, both positive and negative. Speaking at Fast Company’s Innovation Festival 2023, Dalio expressed his confidence that AI would enhance productivity, education, healthcare, and potentially even lead to a shorter workweek. However, he also acknowledged that AI would disrupt jobs and provoke debates among employees and lawmakers who may advocate for slowing down or halting AI’s advancement.
Dalio emphasized that these changes would occur within the next five years, and some developments are already in motion. For instance, ChatGPT, an AI-powered chatbot, has surpassed expectations by passing Wharton MBA exams and reportedly helping someone win the lottery less than a year after its launch in November 2022.
The impact of AI on jobs is also becoming evident, with over 100,000 actors currently striking for better wages. The Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) is even lobbying to replace some actors with AI. This trend could expand to other industries in the near future. In a recent survey by edX, 49% of U.S. CEOs and C-suite executives stated that the skills of their current workforce would not be relevant by 2025. Furthermore, 87% of executives mentioned the struggle to hire employees with AI expertise.
However, this disruption also presents opportunities for workers. Learning AI skills could allow individuals to become AI tutors or trainers and earn extra income. According to Susan Gonzales, CEO and founder of nonprofit AIandYou, there are numerous online learning opportunities available to understand AI and utilize it effectively. Gonzales encourages people from all walks of life, including entrepreneurs, freelancers, and office workers, to increase their knowledge of AI.
In conclusion, AI is poised to be a great disruptor in various aspects of our lives. While it offers numerous benefits, it also raises concerns about job displacement. However, individuals who embrace AI and acquire AI skills can find opportunities to adapt and capitalize on this transformative technology.
