Hapag-Lloyd to Rollout Starlink Satellite Internet Technology Across Fleet

Hapag-Lloyd, a leading global shipping company, is set to transform connectivity at sea with the introduction of Starlink satellite internet technology. After a successful pilot phase, Hapag-Lloyd has decided to implement this high-speed satellite internet across its fleet to enhance communication and connectivity for seafarers.
During the pilot phase, crew members on four vessels had the opportunity to test the Starlink technology, and the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. The satellite network offers bandwidth of up to 250 megabits per second, enabling seamless video calls, streaming services, and other online activities for seafarers.
The implementation of Starlink will not only improve the welfare of seafarers but will also enable Hapag-Lloyd to conduct remote maintenance and vessel inspections. This advancement in communication technology will revolutionize fleet management by ensuring faster and more reliable connectivity.
The rollout plan includes completing the ordering of the necessary technology and antenna installation by the end of 2023. The service activation will begin in early 2024, with a stepwise approach to ensure a smooth transition across the company’s ships. Hapag-Lloyd aims to provide its seafarers with free and fast internet access, greatly enhancing their well-being during their time at sea.
Maximilian Rothkopf, COO of Hapag-Lloyd, expressed his satisfaction with the implementation of Starlink, stating that it will significantly improve the well-being of seafarers and bring about a substantial change in fleet management. Donya-Florence Amer, CIO/CHRO of Hapag-Lloyd, emphasized that this technological advancement marks a significant leap forward in maritime connectivity, revolutionizing how seafarers stay connected while at sea.
This move by Hapag-Lloyd highlights the industry’s growing recognition of the importance of reliable and high-speed internet connectivity for seafarers. With the implementation of Starlink, Hapag-Lloyd aims to set a new standard in maritime communication, ensuring that seafarers can stay connected, access essential services, and maintain a better quality of life onboard.
