Toytota Unveils New Battery Technology Roadmap for Electric Vehicles

Toyota has revealed its plans for the development of next-generation battery technologies for electric vehicles (EVs). The Japanese automaker’s roadmap includes four different battery types, with a focus on improving performance, range, and cost-effectiveness.

The first battery type, known as Performance, will use lithium-ion chemistry and is expected to be available in EVs from 2026. These batteries will offer a driving range of nearly 800 kilometers, thanks to improvements in aerodynamics and weight reduction. Additionally, these batteries will be around 20% more cost-effective and have better charging capacity compared to current battery technology.

The second battery type, called Popularisation, will utilize lithium iron phosphate (LFP) chemistry. This battery will be constructed using bipolar technology, a technique previously used by Toyota for nickel-metal-hydride (NiMH) batteries. Expected to arrive in 2026-2027, these batteries aim to provide a more affordable option for EVs.

The third type, known as High-Performance, will combine lithium-ion chemistry with a high nickel cathode. These batteries will allow for a driving range of over 1000 kilometers and are projected to be available in 2027-2028. Toyota anticipates a 10% reduction in cost along with a fast charging time of under 20 minutes (10-80%) for this battery type.

In addition to these three battery types, Toyota is also focusing on the development of solid-state batteries. These batteries are expected to offer a driving range of up to 1000 kilometers and boast enhanced durability and faster charging times. However, one limitation of solid-state batteries is their smaller battery life.

Toyota estimates that by the end of the decade, 3.5 million EVs will be on the road, powered by these new battery technologies. These advancements will not only benefit Toyota but also other car manufacturers, as they pave the way for the next generation of electric vehicles.
