Zelda Williams Criticizes Use of AI to Recreate Robin Williams’s Voice

Zelda Williams, the daughter of the late actor Robin Williams, has voiced her criticism of the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to recreate her father’s voice. Robin Williams, known for his roles in films such as Mrs. Doubtfire and Dead Poets Society, tragically passed away in 2014. In an Instagram Story post, Zelda expressed her concerns about the use of AI in the industry.

Zelda stated that she has personally witnessed how people want to use AI to create or recreate actors who cannot provide consent, like her father. She finds it disturbing that AI has already been used to replicate her father’s voice and fears the ramifications of this technology extending beyond her own feelings. She believes that living actors should be given the opportunity to use their own choices and human effort in creating characters.

Zelda further expressed her view that these AI recreations are, at best, a poor imitation of greater individuals and, at worst, a Frankensteinian monster that goes against what the industry should stand for. Her comments come amidst an ongoing strike by Hollywood actors over various issues, including the use of AI and residual payments.

While the writers’ strike recently reached a resolution, allowing late-night talk shows to resume production, the actor’s strike continues. SAG-AFTRA, the union representing actors, is set to resume talks with the studios. As the strike progresses, most TV and film productions will remain on hold.

Zelda’s concern highlights the ethical questions surrounding the use of AI to replicate the voices of deceased actors. The industry will need to continue grappling with these issues as AI technology advances.
