Zelda Williams Raises Concerns About AI Replication of Robin Williams’ Voice

Zelda Williams, the daughter of the late Robin Williams, has expressed her concerns regarding the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to replicate her father’s voice. In an Instagram post, she voiced her support for the Screen Actors Guild’s (SAG) fight against AI usage and highlighted the issue of creating and recreating actors without their consent.

Zelda Williams emphasized that the problem goes beyond personal discomfort, as AI technology can manipulate her father’s voice to say things he never did. She echoed the sentiments of the Writers Guild of America (WGA), who recently reached a tentative agreement after going on strike against studios over concerns that include the use of AI. However, SAG-AFTRA is still on strike, specifically protesting against the utilization of AI and other industry-related issues.

In her post, Zelda Williams criticized AI recreations as being subpar imitations of real people and, in some cases, monstrous creations that undermine the essence of the entertainment industry. She argued that living actors deserve the opportunity to bring characters to life through their choices and human effort.

Robin Williams, an iconic actor and comedian, tragically passed away in 2014 at the age of 62. Despite the controversy surrounding AI voice replication, his voice will be featured in an upcoming Disney short film titled “Once Upon a Studio.” The short incorporates previously unheard dialogue recorded by Williams before his passing, with the consent of his estate. It is part of Disney’s celebration of its 100th anniversary and is scheduled for release later this month.
