A satellite phone can provide voice and messaging beyond dependable terrestrial mobile coverage. Successful use still depends on the operator footprint, the exact location or route, a suitable service plan, current network status, local rules and a usable view of the sky.
NETWORK ORIENTATION
How the three principal handheld options differ
The descriptions below are planning summaries. Final suitability must be checked against the operator’s current documentation and the actual operating area.
Iridium
Iridium uses a moving low-Earth-orbit constellation. Its network is designed for broad worldwide operation, including high latitudes. Current handheld families include Iridium 9555 and Iridium Extreme; portable companion terminals are available for selected voice, messaging and data workflows.
Plan for outdoor use or an approved external antenna with a clear view of the sky. Buildings, terrain, foliage and vehicle or vessel structures can interrupt the link.
Inmarsat / Viasat
IsatPhone 2 uses the Inmarsat Global Satellite Phone Service, an L-band geostationary network based on the I-4 satellites and Alphasat. It supports voice and text, with selected low-rate data functions.
The operator documents broad coverage but also describe lower satellite elevation near footprint edges and possible performance degradation in high southern latitudes. Pointing and location therefore matter.
Thuraya
Thuraya provides a regional geostationary footprint across much of Europe, Africa, Asia and Australia. Its current land-voice range includes satellite-only and satellite-plus-cellular models.
Confirm that every destination and transit area falls inside the current footprint. Near coverage edges, antenna placement and an approved external antenna may become especially important.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What teams should know before relying on a satellite phone
1. Will a satellite phone work everywhere?
No universal service guarantee should be assumed. Iridium is designed for broad worldwide and high-latitude operation; Inmarsat/Viasat has a broad geostationary footprint with documented edge and polar limitations; Thuraya is a regional network. In every case, terrain, structures, sky view, network status, equipment, service activation and local regulation can affect availability.
2. Does the handset need a clear view of the sky?
Usually, yes. Extend and orient the antenna as the manufacturer instructs and use the handset outdoors or through an approved external-antenna or docking solution. Buildings, roofs, dense trees, cliffs, mountains and metal vehicle or vessel structures may weaken or block the link.
3. Can I use a satellite phone indoors?
Do not plan around direct indoor handheld use. An indoor installation normally requires a compatible external satellite antenna, cable and dock, fixed terminal or approved repeater arrangement. The exact components and installation rules are device-specific.
4. Can I make a call while moving?
Some handsets and accessories support mobile use, but obstructions and antenna orientation still matter. For a vehicle or vessel, use a safe hands-free installation and a manufacturer-compatible external antenna or docking kit where appropriate. Never operate a handset in a way that distracts a driver or conflicts with local rules.
5. Do satellite phones provide internet access?
Capabilities vary. Traditional handsets focus on voice, SMS and low-rate data. Some portable terminals can connect phones or tablets to supported voice, chat, email, weather or other optimised applications. These services should not be treated as substitutes for terrestrial broadband; check the approved applications and expected data volume before choosing equipment.
6. Can I use my normal mobile SIM?
A dedicated satellite subscription and compatible SIM or service profile are normally required. Some dual-mode Thuraya products can accommodate satellite and terrestrial cellular service, but a standard mobile phone or SIM does not become a satellite phone on its own.
7. Should I choose prepaid or monthly service?
Choose around the operating pattern rather than a headline price. Review expected call and message volume, standby periods, activation lead time, credit or plan validity, geographic conditions, inbound-call needs, renewal process and the cost of keeping emergency units ready. Terms differ by operator, provider, plan and destination.
8. Will the SOS button contact emergency services automatically?
Only if the particular device, service and user configuration support the intended workflow. SOS or assistance features may require registration, pre-programmed contacts or a separate response service. Configure and test them before travel. Do not assume that a handset replaces any safety equipment mandated for a vessel, aircraft, workplace or expedition.
9. How should the phone be tested before deployment?
Activate the service, install current manufacturer-approved firmware, charge the handset and spare power, go outdoors, deploy the antenna, wait for network registration and place a test call using the correct international number format. Test messaging, contacts, accessories and any assistance function, then train every intended user.
10. What happens in bad weather?
Weather resilience differs by system and local conditions, and no handset should be described as immune to disruption. For handheld L-band services, blocked sky view, terrain, structures, antenna position and network geometry can be as important as weather. Test from the real operating environment and keep an alternative communication path for critical work.
11. Are satellite phones legal in every country?
No blanket assumption is safe. Import, possession, activation, carriage and use rules differ by country and may change. Confirm the requirements with the destination and transit authorities and the service provider before shipping or travelling. Organisational export-control, sanctions and end-use checks may also apply.
12. Are satellite calls automatically secure?
Do not assume that a satellite link provides end-to-end protection for sensitive information. Security features differ by handset, terminal, application and network. Apply the organisation’s communication policy and use approved protective controls only where the device, service and regulatory environment support them.
13. Is a handheld suitable for maritime or aviation safety use?
A general-purpose handheld may be useful as an additional communications option, but it is not automatically approved as primary or mandated safety equipment. Maritime and aviation installations, services and operating procedures can have separate certification and regulatory requirements. Confirm those requirements for the vessel, aircraft and jurisdiction.
14. How do I choose the right phone?
Start with the countries, coordinates and routes; then compare network geometry, handheld versus hotspot use, voice and messaging needs, ruggedness, battery and charging plan, SOS workflow, dual-mode requirements, vehicle or vessel accessories, service terms, local legality and support. Select the model only after these constraints are clear.
